About Gliding New Zealand

Gliding New Zealand controls the sport of gliding in New Zealand for those Clubs, Groups and Organisations that are affiliated to it. Gliding New Zealand's activities are carried out within the scope of its constitution.

Gliding New Zealand carries out its responsibilities through a series of committees and officers which cover all facets of gliding in New Zealand.

Every year at the Annual General Meeting, the members of Gliding New Zealand have their say in the direction the sport should pursue in New Zealand, and elect the people to the committees and the various officers to carry out that mandate.

Gliding New Zealand ensures, through teamwork and professional attitudes that the gliding operations for which it is responsible are conducted safely and efficiently. Gliding New Zealand works within the following Guiding Principles:

  • QUALITY - We will continually improve the quality of gliding operations
  • SPORT - We will value and recognise members commitment to fun, adventure, camaraderie, and equal opportunity provided by participation in the sport of gliding

  • COMMUNICATION - We will consult with our members and be responsive to their needs

 

BACKGROUND

Gliding New Zealand (GNZ) is an autonomous organisation holding certificated authority, under Part 149, to manage gliding activities in New Zealand.

GNZ, under it's original name of the New Zealand Gliding Association, was established post the second World War to look after the interests of gliding clubs around New Zealand.

GNZ is an incorporated society, operates under a Constitution, is staffed by volunteers, and it provides the following activities in support of the sport of gliding:

  • Liaison with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Rules
  • The publication of an Exposition to underpin Part 149 Certification
  • The publication of the Manual Of Approved Procedures (MOAP) detailing gliding procedures and operating standards
  • Liaison with the Airways Corporation of New Zealand (ACNZ) on airspace
  • Communication with it's constituent members
  • Management of training for pilots, instructors, engineers, and tow pilots
  • Maintenance of standards for training and the operation of gliders and tow planes
  • Provision of competitions and selection and management of international teams representing New Zealand at World Championships
  • Representation at the International Gliding Commission

GNZ has over 30 constituent members (Clubs), including Commercial Operators, who represent some 1000 pilots and operate over 300 gliders. GNZ represents 11% of all certificated/ licenced pilots in New Zealand and 10% of all registered aircraft in New Zealand.
